This is the second time that I’ve read this novel, an I’m still in love with it. I was sucked in right away an I didn’t put it down until I was completely finished. Which is most likely why I only read it within six hours. Because great novels such as these shouldn’t be taken for granted. They should be read over and over again until they’ve been committed to memory. Which is perhaps the exact reason as to why I own it.
Vivian doesn’t want to be anything like her parents. Ever since she found out the truth about herself she’s rebelled. Because anybody who is okay with being a freak can’t possibly be related to her. And finding out that you can turn into a jaguar considers you a freak in her book. Which is exactly what Vivi tells her parents. An it’s the reason why she tries so hard to be the exact opposite of them in every sort of way. Even down to the way that she dresses. But there’s one thing that she just can’t seem to get away from. Her birthday picnic with her parents every year. In the exact same glade that they’ve been going to for years now. Except this time will be the last time for Vivi. Because just as they start the picnic a scream cuts through the night. A bone-chilling scream of a jaguar that leaves Vivi full of fear. So when her parents tell her to run she doesn’t think anything of it. She only does what they say, and runs and hides. It’s not until later that she regrets her decision to run. Because when she goes back to the clearing she finds her father dead and her mother in the process of dying. Leaving Vivi parentless on her eighteenth birthday. So now Vivi is left regretting everything that she’s ever done to her parents, because all she has left is their memory. An a picture that shows an Aunt that Vivi has never heard of before. One that may live in Louisiana of all places. And when her home is broken into while she’s there Vivi makes a choice that will change her forever. For she’s going to look for this mysterious Aunt of hers, and she’s going to get the answers that she’s looking for. However, what she didn’t think of was that perhaps her Aunt is dead too. Which leads to a bunch of new questions that have no answer. But at least she’s no longer alone. Or so she thought.
This novel is without a doubt a young adult fantasy novel. One that is amazingly fantastic in all its current areas. It’s well-written, has a fantastic plot, and even better characters to boot. The main character is smart, witty, and down-to-earth. Something that is very rare in urban fantasy novels nowadays. Especially considering that she can change into a jaguar. One of the fiercest predators in the world. An when we take the plot into consideration we have a truly excellent novel. One that’s daring, mysterious, intriguing, and so much more. It’s everything that an urban fantasy lover can love in one novel. Making my final recommendation for this novel a darn good one. For this novel should be on every urban fantasy and young adult lovers list. It’s a must-read novel that certainly won’t disappoint you in any way. So run to nearest library (or bookstore) and pick it up today. It’s certainly the type of novel that you won’t forget about anytime soon.
